At-A-Glance
The North Carolina Arboretum: A Retirement Destination for Nature Lovers
For more than 35 years, The North Carolina Arboretum has been cultivating connections between people, plants, and places. Located on a breathtaking 434-acre public garden within the Bent Creek Experimental Forest, just south of Asheville and adjacent to the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 393, the Arboretum is a perfect retreat for retirees seeking relaxation and natural beauty.
A Legacy of Beauty and Education
Established in 1986 as an affiliate of the University of North Carolina System, the Arboretum was inspired by Frederick Law Olmsted, the Father of American Landscape Architecture. His vision for a research arboretum as part of the Biltmore Estate legacy now lives on in this serene and educational haven.
Gardens and Activities for a Peaceful Retirement
Nestled in one of the most botanically diverse regions in the United States, the Arboretum features 65 acres of cultivated gardens that celebrate the region’s cultural heritage and highlight the importance of plants to our world. Visitors, including retirees, can stroll through gardens designed to delight the senses, admire the unique bonsai collection, and reconnect with nature in a peaceful setting.
Stop by the Baker Exhibit Center to learn more about the Arboretum’s history and offerings. From educational exhibits to stunning landscapes, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Guided Trail Walks: A Unique Retirement Activity
From April through October, the Arboretum offers free weekly guided trail walks on Tuesdays and Saturdays. These walks, led by Volunteer Interpretive Guides, are limited to 15 participants and cover topics ranging from botany to regional history. Walks are first-come, first-served, with sign-up sheets available at the Baker Visitors Center.
For retirees seeking opportunities to stay active, learn, and immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, The North Carolina Arboretum offers an unforgettable experience. Whether exploring solo or with loved ones, this serene destination is ideal for a fulfilling retirement lifestyle.
