Baby boomers can do a “gap year” too!

When you hear about recent college grads doing a “gap year,” are you jealous? Don’t have to be, because now baby boomers have the chance to do the same. In this piece by writer Andrea Smith in Great Britain, LonelyPlanet.com is putting out a call for a “retired travel addict” to take an “expenses-paid senior gap year around the world.” Interested? If you’re a baby boomer who regrets not taking time out to see the world when you were younger, we have the perfect job opportunity for you. The UK-based price comparison site Compare the Market has just launched a quest to find a lucky retired person to go off on what it is calling a ‘senior gap year.’

Downtown Reykjavík, Iceland.
The person chosen will be called the company’s ‘senior gap year adviser’ and will receive the latest camera equipment and up to £10k (about $14,000) worth of paid-for expenses, they will visit some of the world’s most stunning destinations, and will be tasked with taking pictures and videos and writing a monthly blog post, creating a fun, relatable guide for future senior travelers.

Traveling in your senior years has become very popular and we recently learned that women over 50 are leading the boom in solo travel. A survey by Compare the Market also reveals the interesting fact that a quarter of the 2,000 British people surveyed regret never taking a gap year when they were younger. The reasons they didn’t do so included the fact that gap years were “unheard of” back then, that they went straight into full-time employment, or that their parents just didn’t allow it. As a response to this, the company has now launched its search for a retired travel addict to take an expenses-paid trip of a lifetime around the world.
To apply, entrants must submit a 200-word personal statement outlining why they’re the best person for the job by February 12th. Three successful candidates will be shortlisted for a public vote and the winner will be announced in mid-March. To apply for this incredible opportunity, see here.
